Budget cuts lead to structural weaknesses
If you've walked around the College lately, you may have noticed the new curse word we've added to our repertoires. It didn't come from movies or rap music. No, this one came from our state government. You got a parking ticket? "Budget Cuts!" There's a bug in your salad? "Budget Cuts!" A pipe wiped out your building? "Fucking Budget Cuts!" It may not be the most eloquent of phrases, but in the situation, nothing fits better.

The "TV War" drags on in Iraq in a hot-again, cold-again, violent and alien desert where mission accomplished couldn't be further from the truth. In between all of the fast-food runs and Starbucks stops - conveniences allotted to us by the hegemony of American might (God bless it) - America finds itself reminded every so often that the war in Iraq continues, despite our collective detachment.

I woke up in a cold sweat, jumped out of my covers and ran to the window. What I saw wasn't a grove of cherry trees or the steeple of Green Hall, but the snow-covered streets of Newcastle, England. At that moment I realized the nightmare was real. Despite all my efforts, the International & Off-Campus Programs office had left me virtually alone in England.

I want to thank the students (and others) who conducted the marathon reading of James Joyce's "Ulysses" last Thursday and Friday. They read the whole doggone book (more than 600 pages - none of them easy) aloud. This took 29-and-a-half hours. The reading was joyous and fun, and I'm honored that they dedicated it to me.
