1. Bandages are frequently forgotten at home. Just about everyone is destined to get a cut and first-aid is often difficult to find. If you've forgotten your own, ask around the floor. Chances are that someone may have them. If that isn't the case, the on-campus convenience store attached to Eickhoff Hall is likely to have them. Stock up the next time you shop.
2. Take-out is a staple for every student. Sites like campusfood.com make it easier than ever to get a quick meal delivered right to your door. However, when the chow arrives, it's helpful to have disposable plates, flatware and cups. They're simple and can be thrown out after dinner. If you can't get to a nearby supermarket, such as Stop & Shop in Pennington, ShopRite in Ewing or the 7-Eleven on Pennington Road, you can try asking around at the various food vendors on campus.
3. Newly-inhabited dorm rooms tend to resemble prison cells. Posters and other wall décor brighten up a room and add personal flair. Many dorm walls are made of cinder blocks which repel weak tape. Heavy clear packing tape is a sure solution for long-term placement. It can be purchased in the campus bookstore.
4. Roommates can be best friends or mortal enemies. It's impossible to know ahead of time. However, a large trunk with a combination lock can give you peace of mind knowing that your valuables are secure. If you've forgotten a trunk, there is a simple fix. Storing valuables in obscure locations such as under mattresses or between folded clothes can work until you visit a home supply store.
5. Roommates can also have sleeping habits very different from your own. If you're having trouble sleeping while your roommate studies late into the night, you can rig a makeshift curtain to block out some light, although this really works best with bunked beds. By hanging twine along the length of your bed and draping extra bedsheets or blankets over the string, you can block out most light and get a good night's rest. If you don't have twine, dental floss or thread are quick substitutes and taped sheets of paper can provide some privacy.
